Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb Smelter Energy Management Program
Tsumeb smelter, located in Namibia, is one of few in the world that can treat complex copper concentrates. Blister copper and sulphuric acid are smelter products. The blister copper is delivered to refineries in Europe and Asia for final processing to copper metal and sulphuric acid is sold for other mining and industrial uses in Namibia.
We were retained to work with a thermal energy expert and a site energy committee to kick-start the development and implementation of an energy management program. We started by developing an energy baseline and identified major gaps in data collection, followed by a two-week site visit to address the data gaps, built tools to simplify and automate data collection analysis, conducted full plant wide energy assessment, and provided training sessions tailored to the energy committee. We developed an energy management framework and provided on-going support as the program and tools are handed over to the site.
HIGHLIGHTS
Significantly improved energy data quality, reduced gaps, and increased granularity
Automated some data analysis and built tools to help site personnel monitor energy demand and consumptions and report out to management and to head office
Increased site energy committee capacity to sustain the program and to take actions
